The Olympic Stadium in Breslau ( Polish Stadium Olimpijski we Wrocławiu ), formerly the Schlesierkampfbahn in Sportpark Leerbeutel , formerly also the Hermann Göring Stadium , is a multifunctional stadium in Breslau . This Breslau stadium was built during the Weimar Republic . In the home of Speedway club WTS Wrocław still find Speedway -race and football games the Panthers Wrocław ( LFA ) instead. The attendance record was set on September 3, 1961 at the Speedway World Team Championship . 50,000 spectators were present in the stadium, unofficially it should have been up to 70,000 visitors.

history

The stadium, initially with 35,000 seats, was built from 1926 to 1928 according to a design by the Wroclaw architect Richard Konwiarz and expanded from 1935 to 1939. Contrary to its name, the stadium was never used for the Olympic Games . The stadium's Polish name comes from the Olympic bronze medal for architectural designs that Richard Konwiarz received in 1932 for this building.

While the German national football team established their reputation as the Breslau-Elf with an 8-0 win over Denmark in this stadium on May 16, 1937 , the stadium was not the home of a club in Polish times either, but merely the venue for international matches and European Cups in Śląsk Wrocław . In 1938 the German Gymnastics and Sports Festival took place in the stadium.

A complete renovation was initially planned for the 2012 European Football Championship , but the discussion with the Miejski stadium on a new stadium in the Fabryczna district of Wrocław for around 43,000 spectators prevailed. The Giants Wrocław and Devils Wrocław football teams played their games until 2013 . After a merger of the teams, they now play as Panthers Wrocław of the Liga Futbolu Amerykańskiego in the Olympic Stadium.

Since the spring of 2015, the stadium has been extensively renovated for the 2017 World Games until the beginning of 2017. Despite the renovations, the sports facility should keep its character. The work includes the restoration of the brick facade and the bell tower. Accessibility for disabled visitors will be improved and spaces will be built for commentators. In addition, the infrastructure around the stadium is being improved and the floodlights are being renewed.
