The German Gymnastics and Sports Festival 1938 took place in Breslau from July 27th to 31st, 1938. The venue was the Olympic Stadium in Breslau .
The 18th German Gymnastics Festival coincided with the 5th German Fighting Games . Because of the combined program, the name has also been expanded. The event took place with 150,000 participants from ten countries, 150,000 parade participants and 70,000 participants at the final demonstration.
The festival was one of the largest mass events of the Nazi era.
As part of the German Gymnastics and Sports Festival in 1938 , there was a district selection competition between the teams selected from the 17 football districts that existed at the time . In contrast to the Reichsbund Cup competitions, this tournament also featured a consolation round that was contested by the losers of the main tournament. The winner of this competition was the Ostmark team with a 4-1 victory over Lower Silesia . From the quarter-finals onwards, all games took place in Wroclaw , the last sixteen were played in various venues in Silesia.
The football tournament was held from July 24th to July 31st, 1938, so the teams had to play several games within a week. Due to the large number of sporting events this week, some games were already played in the morning hours, which had a negative effect on the audience.
Due to the crowd, the game could only start 50 minutes later. Because of the darkness that then fell, the game was played only twice for 35 minutes without a half-time break.
