The 13th German Gymnastics Festival took place from July 14th to 18th, 1923 with around 247,000 active gymnasts in Munich .

General

Originally the 13th German Gymnastics Festival was supposed to be held in Stuttgart in 1918 , which was canceled due to the First World War . So there were 10 years between the 12th festival in Leipzig and the event in Munich. The event was sponsored by the German Gymnastics Association with its chairman at the time, Oskar Berger . The imperial post was the occasion of the gymnastics festival a special with motifs of the festival poster and the hard card out, also an eight-part was film shot on the sports festival.

For the first time in the history of the German Gymnastics Festival, women took part in the parade and held competitions apart from demonstrations.

Procedure and content of the gymnastics festival

The first participants were received on July 12th at the main train station . The official opening with the handover of the banner of the German Gymnastics Association took place on July 14th on Königsplatz , followed by a celebration for invited guests in the festival hall . On July 15, a two-part pageant became a hard place on the Theresienwiese performed with about 300,000 participants, interrupted with a ceremony of the First World War fallen .

10,000 female and 30,000 gymnasts took part in the large representative calisthenics , and there were also numerous special demonstrations. Numerous all- round competitions took place with evaluation : twelve, ten and five-way competitions for men, seven and four-way competitions for women, mixed nine and three-way competitions for older participants. In addition, numerous competitions in athletics ( individual and relay ), fencing , wrestling and swimming were held . The finals for the German championship in hit ball , sling ball and ball relay were decided at the festival.

The final event with honoring the winners, who received wreaths and certificates , also took place on Königsplatz. After the joint procession to the fairground, the event ended with a large fireworks display . After the end of the gymnastics festival 63 gym rides were offered.

Accompanying program

Music and choir events took place every day, and Erich Ludendorff and Edmund Neuendorff spoke at a youth celebration hour in the festival hall . There was also a singing competition during the festival. The Academic Gymnastics Association celebrated its 40th anniversary as part of the gymnastics festival.
