Eustachy Rylski

Eustachy Rylski (born November 18, 1944 in Nawojowa near Nowy Sącz ) is a Polish writer, playwright and screenwriter.

Life

Eustachy Rylski was born the son of an engineer. His father, a fighter in the Polish Home Army , was executed in September 1944, two months before Eustachy was born. Rylski grew up in the family of his grandparents.

After graduating from high school in Karpacz at the age of 17, he began working in a car repair shop in Sobieszów near Jelenia Góra . He couldn't afford to go to college. He worked as a construction worker, civil servant, educator in a construction vocational school, founded a construction company, which he gave up after his writing debut.

His novel “Stankiewicz”, published in 1984, was hailed as the debut of the year and received critical acclaim. The book has been translated into several languages. His next work, the short stories "Tylko chłód" ("Nur die Kälte", 1987) could not repeat the success of the debut. No prose work was written in the next twenty years.

Together with his wife Lucyna Tempska-Rylska, he worked on the editorial team of the women's monthly magazine “Twój Styl” for the Bauer Media Group . In 1989 the director of the Polish TV theater , Jerzy Koenig, commissioned him to write the scripts for the TV theater performances. This resulted in five plays, which were also published in the monthly "Dialog".

The Rylski family moved to Chotomów near Warsaw . In 2004, after a break of 20 years, he wrote the novel “Człowiek w cieniu” (“The Man in the Shadow”), which won him the Józef Mackiewicz Prize. The next novel "Warunek" ("The Condition") was awarded the Nike Prize in 2005. In 2007 the stories "Wyspa" ("The Island") appeared, including the story "Dziewczynka z hotelu Excelsior" ("Girls from the Excelsior Hotel"), which was filmed by Antoni Krauze based on the Rylskis screenplay.

Awards

Eustachy Rylski was awarded the Józef Mackiewicz Prize in 2004. His novel "Warunek" was nominated in 2006 for the Nike Prize . In 2011 Eustachy Rylski received the Gloria Artis gold medal . He was awarded the Samuel Bogumil Linde Prize on June 23, 2013 in Toruń .
