The Gauliga Pommern was one of the top German football leagues during the National Socialist era .

history

The Gau classification 1933,
No. 2 = Pomerania

At the beginning of the Gauliga Pomerania, 14 teams played from 1933 in two equal seasons (west and east) for the title of Gaumeister, who was allowed to take part in the final round of the German football championship. The respective season winners played the champions in home and away games.

In the 1937/38 season, the relays were combined so that now ten clubs in the first-class league determined the finalists. Two years later, the next reform was due. Because of the beginning of the war, military teams in particular had to be withdrawn from games. Therefore, a total of nine clubs played in two seasons for the Gaume Championship. In 1940, 14 teams were again first class, eight clubs were represented in the West Season and six clubs in the East . From 1941, six teams played in each of the two seasons. In 1944 the division was further subdivided due to the war. Because of the chaos of the war, the Gaume Championship was not played to the end.

The teams of the Gauliga Pommern failed for years in the first phase of the final round of the German championship. Only at the last edition could a team from the Gau advance to the semi-finals with HSV Groß Born . There the team was defeated by the later runner-up Luftwaffe-Sportverein Hamburg with 2: 3, the game for third place against 1. FC Nürnberg was waived due to the war.

While the civil clubs were able to prevail in the first few years, the military sports clubs and numerous air force sports clubs dominated the league by the beginning of the Second World War at the latest .

League system

The league system in the Pomeranian football district was subject to some changes over the course of its existence. Under the Gauliga, the Pomeranian district football class was set up as the second league stage, which was played in several departments. The winners of the departments qualified for the promotion round to the Gauliga, the two best-placed teams in this round rose to the Gauliga. The 1st and 2nd district classes were arranged under the Bezris class. From 1939/40 the Gauliga was renamed the area class and the district class into 1st class, including the 2nd, 3rd and 4th classes.
