Carl Rosa , actually Karl August Nicholas Rose (* 22. March 1842 in Hamburg , † the thirtieth April 1889 in Paris ) was a British conductor and theater intendant of German descent.

Life

Carl Rosa, the son of a businessman, grew up in his native Hamburg, first studying music at the Conservatory in Leipzig, then from 1862 in Paris. In 1863 the young violinist was appointed concertmaster in his hometown in Germany. Three years later he performed successfully as a soloist at the Crystal Palace in London, but also had professional success as a conductor in both England and the United States. There he met the Scottish soprano Euphrosyne Parepa (1836–1874), who appeared under the pseudonym Madame Parepa-Rosa, and married her in 1867 in New York. Two years later, the couple founded the Parepa Rosa English Opera Company in New York and toured the States with her for three seasons, with Parepa being the star and Carl the conductor. Both of these things were due to the fact that the “Great Opera” came to provincial towns for the first time, where the musical art had not been present before. In 1872 Rosa and his wife returned to England, renamed their touring theater the Carl Rosa Opera Company , and toured Great Britain and Ireland. For the next 15 years, provincial performances alternated with performances in more prominent locations such as the Drury Lane Theater in London. Rosa introduced many opera works to the public that were still unknown in England at the time and employed a number of outstanding singers at the time.

The company continued to exist after his sudden death, survived the First World War, but had to go into liquidation in 1920. However, through several mergers with other companies, it survived until its merger with Sadlers' Wells Opera in 1985. The company was brought back to life as Carl Rosa Opera Limited in 1997 under the artistic direction of Peter Mulloy.

Carl Rosa's grave is in Highgate Cemetery , London .
