Emanuel Christian Haeusgen-Hedmondt (born October 24, 1857 in Portland , † April 25, 1940 in London ) was an American singer and singing teacher . He was in his time mainly in the English-speaking world as the leading Wagner - Tenor . There he is mainly known by his stage name Charles Hedmont .

Life

He began his vocal studies in Montreal , but later moved to the Royal Conservatory in Leipzig , where he trained as a tenor vocalist. He made his debut in Berlin and was a member of the Leipzig Opera ensemble from 1882 to 1889 , where he was present in guest roles until 1907. Here he sang as a lyric tenor, among other very successful major Mozart - roles . On January 20, 1888, he took part in the role of Don Gaston de Viratos at the premiere of Karl Maria von Weber's The Three Pintos in the arrangement and under the direction of Gustav Mahler .

In 1888 he sang in Bayreuth to David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg . In 1890 he appeared as Lohengrin at the Academy of Music in New York City . As a member of Emma Juch's opera company , he made guest appearances in Canada . From 1891 to 1909 he was the first tenor for the Carl Rosa Opera Company to tour Great Britain .

Hedmondt lived in England since 1892, where he participated in premieres of Wagner operas in English at the Royal Opera House from 1895 , thereby establishing himself as the leading Wagner tenor in the English-speaking world. He was also successful as a concert singer in England and North America . In 1914 he went on a major tour through South Africa , Australia and Canada.

After finishing his career he worked as a singing teacher in Edinburgh . Most recently he lived in London. The urn with his ashes is in the Golders Green Crematorium .

Emanuel Christian Hedmondt was with the soprano and singing teacher Marie Hedmondt , geb. Kacerovsky (1859–1941), married. From this marriage he left two daughters:

  • Erna Haeusgen-Hedmondt (born September 11, 1886 in Leipzig)
  • Ilva Marie Haeusgen-Hedmondt (born August 24, 1887 in Leipzig, † 1971, in Zurich as married von Liliencron)
