The Gauliga Württemberg ( 1939-1941 officially sports division Württemberg ) was one of 16 top football leagues in Germany after the National Socialist seizure of power .

history

The Gau classification 1933,
No. 15 = Württemberg

The division of the teams into the Gauliga Württemberg from 1933 was based on the Reichsgau Württemberg-Hohenzollern . In the first season of 1933/34 nine teams played for the finalists in the German championship, from the following season ten teams took part. In 1940 the league was divided into two seasons, each with six teams playing. The respective season winners played the Württemberg champions and participants to the final round. From 1941 there was again only one season. Initially, twelve teams competed against each other, from 1942 only ten clubs were represented in the league. The 1944/45 season was canceled due to the turmoil of the war.

From the 1938/39 season onwards, the clubs in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg were assigned to the Bodensee district in the Württemberg sports area. However, none of the Vorarlberg clubs rose to the Gauliga.

The VfB Stuttgart was the only team in the Gauliga Württemberg, which was able to advance to the final of the German championship. On June 23, 1935, however, the final in Cologne was lost to FC Schalke 04 4-6.
