German championship 1941/42

In the 36th German championship season 1942 / 43 were war impact becoming stronger.

Not only the lack of fuel and means of transport made the game more difficult, but increasingly the more frequent and more severe bombing attacks by the Allies, which not only damaged the infrastructure more and more, but also forced many games to be abandoned due to bomb alarms. In addition, there was an increasing shortage of players among the first-class clubs, whereupon more and more clubs formed so-called war syndicates (KSG) in order to get a team capable of playing.

Instead, the sporting importance of the military sports clubs, such as the air force , armed forces and army sports clubs , grew steadily; they benefited from the convocation of good players who were now available to the military clubs at their respective locations. However, these clubs were then very heavily affected by troop transfers, which led to very large fluctuations in performance or even made it necessary to withdraw from the current season.

At the beginning of the season, the name Sportgau was reintroduced in line with the regional structure of the NSDAP. The difficulties in transport led to a further division of the Sportgaue, so the previous Nordmark sports area was divided into the three districts of Hamburg , Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg , and the Lower Saxony sports area into the Weser-Ems and South Hanover-Braunschweig districts . The sports area of Bavaria was also divided into a northern and a southern area. This brought the number of finalists to 29.

The Dresdner SC became German champions for the first time . After the runner-up in 1940 and the two cup successes, the championship was now won. The final opponent came with the FV Saarbrücken for the first time from the Saar area, the extreme south-west of the empire. The predecessor club of today's 1. FCS had defeated the big favorites First Vienna FC 1894 , the reigning runner-up, in the semi-finals . Defending champion FC Schalke 04 was surprisingly eliminated in the quarter-finals; it was the weakest performance of the Gelsenkirchen team since 1931.
