The twenty-first German football championship ended very late. The new German soccer champion could only be chosen on July 29th . The reason was the participation of the national team in the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam . The final round of the German championship could therefore only begin on July 8th with the round of 16.
The new German champion was Hamburger SV , who celebrated their second, for some already their third, title win. In contrast, the dominance of the Nuremberg / Fürth region in German football seemed to be coming to an end. For the first time since 1913 , no team from this region could qualify for the championship finals. Both the defending champion and record champions 1. FC Nürnberg and the two-time title holder SpVgg Fürth were not in the final round. The club failed in the Bayern League, the SpVgg in the so-called consolation round.
In return, two Munich teams, FC Wacker and FC Bayern Munich , took part in the championship for the first time and both even reached the semi-finals. The Munich Bavarians have already won their second southern German championship title and experienced the first high phase of their impressive club history during this time. They were considered a popular championship favorite this season. The end in the semifinals was all the more depressing when they went down against HSV with 2: 8.
There was also a changing of the guard at the ATSB . With Adler Pankow from Berlin winning the title, the championship did not go to Saxony for the first time in seven seasons . At the German Gymnastics Association , the title went north like at the DFB: The Harburger TB 1865 won the first time, but was lucky, because the HTB had already failed in the quarter-finals on TV Fürth 1860 , but still came to the green table to the semifinals. The German youth force played no champions this year.
