The eighteenth German football championship saw a reform of the finals for the first time since the 1905/06 season . The German Football Association decided that each regional association could now send two participants to the final round. The associations with the largest number of members, the South German Football Association and the West German Game Association, were even allowed to provide three participants.
However, the additional participants were not always the runner-up or the championship third. In the coming seasons, special qualifying rounds were often held in the regions to determine these participants, or in one case the regional cup winners were sent to the final round. It was also new that the defending champion was no longer automatically qualified.
The 1. FC Nürnberg won the final against the FSV Frankfurt his fourth championship title and thus became the sole record title holder.
In the West German Gaming Association, the "new way" was just in its second season. This meant that, like two years ago, there was no West German championship this year. To determine the final round participants, the WSV played a qualifying round again, in which the current leaders of the district leagues were allowed to participate. The winner was Duisburg SpV , which is therefore often mistakenly listed as the West German champion for this year.
