German football championship 1946/47

The German soccer championship 1947/48 was the first all-German championship in soccer after the Second World War .

This first post-war championship was still a championship designed for “ Germany as a whole ” and, like the previous title fights, was held in the form of a final round. A competition in the knockout system with eight teams was planned, with the games to be played on neutral ground. The zone masters of the four zones of occupation as well as the masters of the Berlin city championship , plus the runner-ups of the British, American and French zones of occupation, were eligible to participate .

As a consequence of the scheduling of a German championship final, a champion was determined for the first time in the Soviet occupation zone in the third post-war season . This first " Eastern Zone Championship " was held in the form of a final round, in which two representatives from each of the five countries took part, making a total of ten teams. Since up until then state championships had only been held in the states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg , in the states of Saxony-Anhalt , Saxony and Thuringia , in which only district championships had previously been played, qualifying rounds had to be scheduled at short notice in which the two state representatives were determined could; SG Planitz from Saxony was the winner of the championship in the SBZ .

In the West German occupation zones, the league landscape of the coming years took on its final shape this season. After the American and French occupation zones and in Berlin , football top leagues were also played in the British occupation zone . Based on the traditional areas of the North German and West German Football Association before 1933, the upper leagues North ( Lower Saxony , Hamburg , Bremen , Schleswig-Holstein ) and West ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) were created. The resulting championship system in West German football (including West Berlin ) with five major leagues as the highest division and one championship final was to last until 1963 with only minor changes.

Since the qualification for the DM finals this season was still over the zone championships, such a championship had to be held in the British zone for the last time. This happened as in the previous season in a championship final with eight teams. The four best-placed teams of the Oberliga Nord and Oberliga West were qualified.

The German championship, which was designed for the whole of Germany, was then overtaken by the political events. Four weeks before the start of the championship finals, on June 21, 1948, the currency reform was carried out in the three western zones ; This was a decisive step towards the division of Germany. There was considerable tension between the three Western Allies and the Soviets. a. also led to the withdrawal of the SG Planitz . As a result, the last all-German championship for the time being also became the first West German title fight (plus Berlin ; two years later, in the spring of 1950, both sides negotiated again unsuccessfully about the participation of teams from the GDR ). Until 1991 there should now be two German champions every year. The first German (West German) post-war champion was 1. FC Nürnberg , which was able to celebrate its 7th title win and was again the sole record holder (before FC Schalke 04 ).
