Eduard "Edi" Schaffer (born December 13, 1921 in Dux , Czechoslovakia ; † May 1, 2017 ) was a German football goalkeeper .

Career

Before Schaffer became a soccer goalkeeper, he began playing handball . In his home country he played for DSC Dux and DSC Karlsbad. In 1941 he was in the Sudeten German selection when he was called up for military service. Participation in a national team course prevented a front-line deployment lasting several weeks.

He was called up to the 17th Infantry Division in Nuremberg , where the Burgstern Noris football team was formed. His superior at the time was the football player Julius Uebelein . After he had to take part in the war against the Soviet Union in the meantime , Edi Schaffer returned to Nuremberg after his leave of absence, where he established a permanent connection with 1. FC Nuremberg . After the end of the war, thanks to Uebelein, he already played for the club reserve, but then first moved to the Aischgrund and joined VfL Neustadt / Aisch. He came to VfL Neustadt bei Coburg through a sports officer , from where he was also appointed to the Bayern team.

When the club goalkeeper Georg Lindner died unexpectedly of TBC in 1947 , Schaffer was signed. At that time he was the only non-Franconian on the team. The first year was extremely successful. He showed an excellent performance and at the end of the season 1. FC Nuremberg was in the final of the German championship, which was won 2-1 against 1. FC Kaiserslautern , which is also attributed to his performance. It was the first post-war championship and the seventh title for the then record champions.

In the following season a protracted injury threw Schaffer far back and in the following year he had to fight for the position as number 1 with Rudi Fischer . He was also injured again and again, which was also due to his risky style of play. Nevertheless, by 1958 he made 228 league appearances for 1. FC Nürnberg and a total of 413 club games. In 1951 he also came to two missions in the German B national team. On September 22, 1951 he played in Augsburg against Austria B. The game ended 1: 1 and on October 14, 1951 he wore the colors of the German B national team in Basel in a game against Switzerland B, which was won 2: 0. Last year, however, he had already retired to the second tier and only replaced his successor Roland Wabra .

In the post-war period Edi Schaffer worked as a semi-professional. In addition to football, he worked as a commercial clerk at Siemens-Schuckertwerke and after 1958 he remained true to his profession and the company.

Schaffer lived in Lauf near Nuremberg and was made an honorary member of the 1. FCN in 2006. And when the blocks of the club's home stadium were named after deserving club players in the same year, block 42 in the upper tier of the main stand was given the name "Edi-Schaffer-Block".
