Walter Kolzen (born May 11, 1899 in Hamburg ; † June 14, 1947 there ) was a German football player . As an active member of Hamburger SV , the right winger won the German soccer championship twice with his team in 1923 and 1928 . From 1920 to 1930 he played a total of 161 competitive games for the "Rothosen" and scored 29 goals.

Career

When Hamburger SV strengthened its squad with several newcomers in the 1920/21 season, this also included the previous right wing of VfTuR / Sperber Hamburg , Ludwig Breuel and Walter "Lauf" Kolzen. The new right winger played all 21 competitive games in his first season at HSV and was the flank giver for the two goal scorers, Breuel and Otto Harder . Kolzen and his new club were in first place with 34: 2 points ahead of Holstein Kiel and VfL Altona . In the games for the North German championship in April 1921 against the southern district champion Hannover 96 , the "Rautträger" clearly prevailed with 3: 1 and 8: 0 goals. His first of a total of 17 final round matches (3 goals) - from 1921 to 1929 - for the German championship played the man on the right wing on May 22, 1921, in the 1: 2 defeat against the Duisburg game club.

In his second year at Rothenbaum, 1921/22, Kolzen came to the second North German championship under coach Rudi Agte at the side of the newcomers Asbjørn Halvorsen and Albert Beier . In the games for the German championship in 1922 , there was an "infinite final" between Hamburger SV and 1. FC Nürnberg . After two undecided games - on June 18, the first final game was canceled after 189 minutes when the score was 2: 2 due to darkness; the replay on August 6th was ended with a score of 1: 1 after 105 minutes, as the "club" only had seven players on the field - after a protest, a revision decision and the resignation of the HSV at the Bundestag in November in Jena, no champion of the year 1922 determined.

The Victoria - challenge cup for the German soccer champions from 1903 to 1944 - won the Hamburger SV for the first time in 1923 and again in 1928.

A year later, in the final round in 1922/23 , the North Germans regularly won the title. The final against Union Oberschöneweide ended 3-0 for Hamburger SV. The "Rautträger" had contested the final in the same attack formation as in the previous year, with Kolzen, Ludwig Breuel , Otto Harder , Karl Schneider and Hans Rave . When further reinforcements became active at HSV with Walter Risse and Hans Lang during the 1923/24 season, after winning the North German championship again, the final of the German championship was the final on June 9, 1924 against 1. FC Nürnberg 0: 2 goals lost. Instead of Breuel, Hugo Fick now acted as a half right at his side. In the next three years, Kolzen and colleagues no longer played a decisive role in the games for the German championship.

Kolzen achieved his last major success with HSV in the 1927/28 season. When winning the North German championship before Holstein Kiel, he had scored three goals in six games. In the semifinals of the German championship on July 22, 1928 in Duisburg against FC Bayern Munich  - in whose ranks there were several national players with Emil Kutterer , Ludwig Goldbrunner , Sigmund Haringer , Josef Pöttinger and Ludwig Hofmann - he belonged to the HSV-Elf blocked Bayern's way to the final with an 8-2 win. Hamburger SV also won the final with 5-2 goals on July 29, 1928 against Hertha BSC. The template specialist stood out as a two-time goalscorer alongside his attacking colleagues Heinrich Ziegenspeck, Otto Harder, Franz Horn and Hans Rave.

The year the title was defended, 1928/29, was dominated by the Hamburg football revolution . In the "Round of Ten", HSV took first place with 17: 1 points. A spring round was not played. The North German championship was decided by two playoffs against Holstein Kiel (4: 2) and Hannover 96 (6: 0). In the final round of the German championship, the defending champion failed on June 30, 1929 in Altona in the quarter-finals due to a 2-0 defeat at the new German champions, SpVgg Fürth. Kolzen was in action as the right winger, the HSV attack was completed by Karl Sveistrup, Otto Harder, Franz Horn and Hans Rave. It was the last final game of "Lauf" Kolzen.

After nine league games with two goals in the 1930/31 season in the Hamburg Oberliga, Kolzen joined the local rivals SC Victoria Hamburg together with Harder and Rave and ended his career there.

Others

Kolzen was the son of the textile laundry owner and lender Hans Kolzen (1853–1929) and thus the offspring of a wealthy and branched family of entrepreneurs who ran several large laundries in Hamburg (company “Hans Kolzen Laundry + Linen Rental Institute” etc.).

In 1947 Kolzen, who was a senior commercial clerk in his civil profession, died of a myocardial infarction in Hamburg and was buried there in the main cemetery in Ohlsdorf.
