Blethgen belonged as a striker from 1912 to 1925 to the Duisburger SpV , for which he played point games in the championships organized by the West German Game Association . He first made his debut in the ten-team association league, which existed in addition to the four districts, some of which were divided into groups. Having emerged as winners from the Association League, both his team and the winner of the A-Class final, Union Düsseldorf , decided not to play the final due to deadline reasons. The West German game association then determined the Duisburg SpV to the West German champions.
In the pre-war season he played point games in the Ruhr district. After his team emerged from this championship without losing points , they prevailed in the subsequent final round of the West German championship before the other four district champions without defeat.
After the end of the First World War , the district championships were held in eight districts, with Duisburg SpV able to assert itself as champions in the northern district of the Rhine. In the final round of the West German Championship, after the 2-0 victory over FC Jahn Siegen in the quarter-finals, they were eliminated in the semi-finals with a 2-1 defeat against BC 01 from Cologne .
In the 1920/21 season he played in the Gau Berg-Mark, one of five Gau whose winners reached the finals. After his club achieved this, it prevailed against the other masters of the Gaue.
Another season in the Gau Berg-Mark followed, which ended in third place; in the final round of the West German Championship he took part with his team as defending champion and finished them with one point behind Arminia Bielefeld in second place.
His last three seasons, which he completed in the Lower Rhine region, were crowned with three Gaume Championships and two West German Championships; only in season 1922/23 it was not enough for the final, as he and his crew on April 8 in München-Gladbach of TuRU Dusseldorf with 0: 2 defeated in the semifinals.
Because of the five West German championships, he also took part in the final round of the German championship five times ; he was used eight times and scored one goal. He made his debut on April 20, 1913 in Frankfurt am Main in a 2-1 quarter-final victory over FC Stuttgarter Cickers . Without him, his team advanced through the semifinals, won 2-1 against Holstein Kiel in Essen on April 27, 1913, into the final.
