The Kölner SC 1899 (officially: Kölner Sport-Club 1899 eV ) was a sports club from Cologne . It is the oldest football club in town. The first team took part once in the final round of the German championship in 1906 and played for four years in the first-class Gauliga Mittelrhein .

history

On May 6, 1899, dissatisfied members of the Kölner TV 1843 founded the International Cölner Fußball-Club 1899 , which was renamed the Cölner Fußball-Club 1899 (Cölner FC 1899) a short time later . After the Orthographic Conference of 1901 , the club was renamed the Kölner Fußball-Club 1899 (Kölner FC 1899). Finally, on August 24, 1916, it was renamed Kölner Sport-Club 1899, or Kölner SC 1899 for short. The first home ground was the parade ground at Neusser Tor, before the club moved into Weidenpescher Park in 1903 .

In 1903 the club won the West German Championship, which was played for the first time . Since the Rheinisch-Westfälischer Spiel-Verband was not a member of the DFB at the time , the Cologne team could not take part in the German championship . Three years later , the Cologne team won the West German Championship with a 3-2 playoff win over Duisburg SpV and took part in the German Championship . In the quarter-finals, the team met 1. FC Pforzheim and achieved a 2-0 half-time lead. The Pforzheimer were able to equalize and finally won 4-2 after extra time . The West German title defense failed in 1907 , because the Cologne team failed in the semifinals with 1: 3 at Düsseldorfer FC 99 .

In 1909, Cologne's FC 1899 was one of the founding members of the Ten League , which brought together the ten best-playing teams in the Rhineland at the time. After a fourth place in the opening season 1909/10, three years later it was only enough for last place before the division of ten was dissolved again. After the end of the First World War , the first great era of the club came to an end. In 1920 the team was runner-up in the first-class district league Rheinischer Südkreis behind the Cologne BC 01 , before the team fell back into mediocrity in the mid-1920s. In 1927, the Cologne SC in 1899 rose from the top division for the first time.

It was not until 1931 that it was promoted again and two years later the club qualified for the newly created Gauliga Mittelrhein. There the team did not get beyond mediocrity and had to relegate in 1937. As a consequence of this, the Cologne SC merged with the local rival Cologne CfR in 1899 , which had a strong team but no suitable stadium. On July 13, 1937, the founding meeting of VfL Cologne 1899 took place in the festival hall of the Wolkenburg .
