Hoheluft-West is a district of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg , which is characterized by its largely preserved Wilhelminian style architecture. With around 19,200 inhabitants per square kilometer (end of 2013), the district, together with the neighboring Hoheluft-Ost, is one of the most densely populated districts in Germany.

geography

Hoheluft-West (Low German: Hogeluft-West ) is located in the Eimsbüttel district . The district has the shape of a trapezoid that widens towards the north , whereby the northern side, in contrast to the three other sides of the trapezoid, is not straight. The sides of the trapezoid are between 900 and 1000 meters long, only the southern side is shorter at 450 meters. To the south the district is bounded by the Isebek Canal , on the other side of which Harvestehude begins. To the east, the Hoheluftchaussee forms the border between the district and Hoheluft-Ost . To the north, Hoheluft-West borders Lokstedt , the border follows Troplowitzstrasse and then offset to the south along Wiesingerweg and the green strip between Quickbornstrasse and Beiersdorf's premises. To the west, Unnastraße and Scheideweg are the border to the Eimsbüttel district .

Within these very narrow boundaries, Gärtnerstrasse ( B5 or Ring 2 ) is the main traffic axis, while Eppendorfer Weg is also an important business and thoroughfare.

history

For the development of the district before 1951, see : History of Hoheluft

After a long phase of stagnating student numbers, the number of students enrolled in the inner city districts has increased again since 2000, which made it difficult to choose the “dream school” you want based on your location. In 2012, the Hoheluft high school on Christian-Förster-Strasse was re-established in partly historical and partly newly built buildings. The building of the primary school Hoheluft in Wrangelstrasse was demolished in 2013-2017 and replaced by a larger new building that allows three-class classes.

traffic

At the intersection of the Hoheluftchaussee with the Gärtnerstraße - Breitenfelder Straße (part of the Ring 2 ), the federal road 447 branches off from the federal road 5 . Both major streets have two lanes in each direction.

As early as May 5, 1870, a horse-drawn tram was laid through the Hoheluftchaussee to the former border house (at Martinistraße) and electrified in 1894. In 1900 this line was given the number 2, and as 2 or from 1925 to 1953 also as 22 and later also with the amplifier line 4, the tram ran there until 1978.

There have been no systems for rail traffic in Hoheluft-West since the last tram line 2 was closed in 1978. The existing since 1912 Hoheluftbrücke the underground - U3 (Ring Line) is beyond the Isebekkanals in Harvestehude . The former tram route in the middle of the Hoheluftchaussee is now used as a bus lane; Metrobus line 5, which runs there, is one of the busiest bus routes in Germany with around 60,000 passengers a day (as of 2007).
