The state elections in Hamburg 1986 took place on November 9th, 1986 and was the 12th election to the Hamburg citizenship .
The previously sole ruling SPD, with First Mayor Klaus von Dohnanyi as the top candidate, suffered heavy losses. As in 1982 , the coalition negotiations failed, so that a new election was held in May 1987 .
