The Hamburg state election in 1987 took place on May 17, 1987 and was the 13th election for Hamburg citizenship .
The election became necessary after the parties could not agree on a coalition government after the 1986 state elections and Klaus von Dohnanyi ( SPD ) remained in office as First Mayor until the new election. The FDP withdrew after nine years returned to the citizenry, and thus the formation allowed a social-liberal coalition with the SPD.
