Major General Miles Francis Stapleton Fitzalan-Howard, 17th Duke of Norfolk KG GCVO CB CBE MC (born July 21, 1915 in London , † June 24, 2002 in Hambleden ) was a British politician and military.
Life
His father, Bernard Edward Fitzalan-Howard, 3rd Baron Howard of Glossop , was a second cousin of Bernard Fitzalan-Howard, 16th Duke of Norfolk . His mother, Mona Tempest Stapleton, 11th Baroness Beaumont , was a peeress in her own right.
He was married to Anne Mary Teresa Constable-Maxwell since July 4, 1949. From this marriage two sons and three daughters were born. Miles Fitzalan-Howard, 17th Duke of Norfolk, died on June 24, 2002. His title was inherited by his eldest son Edward .
Military and political career
Fitzalan-Howard studied at Ampleforth College and Christ Church College at the University of Oxford . He then entered the military as a second lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards . During World War II he served in France, North Africa, Sicily and Italy. In 1944 he was awarded the Military Cross (MC).
After the war he was promoted several times and in 1958 became head of the British military mission in the Soviet armed forces in Germany . In 1957 he was made division commander of the 1st Armored Division and promoted to major general . In 1967 he left military service.
After his mother's death in 1971, he inherited her Barony Beaumont and thus became a member of the House of Lords . When his father also died in 1972, he also inherited his barony, Howard of Glossop .
In 1975, on the death of his distant cousin, he became the Duke of Norfolk as his next male agnate . With this title not only the numerous other nobility titles of the Dukes of Norfolk were connected, but also the hereditary feudal offices of an Earl Marshal of England, a hereditary marshal and chief butler of England passed to him. In the role of Earl Marshall, he was head of the College of Arms . He was knight of the Order of the Garter in 1983 and in 1986 he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order .
His dignity, especially the office of Earl Marshal, meant that he also received several civil honorary offices. He became an Honorable Fellow of St. Edmunds House in Cambridge (1983), an Honorable Bencher of Inner Temple and Chairman of the Arundel-Castle Trustee (1985/86). Since he, like the entire Howard family, was strictly Catholic, awards from the Roman Catholic Church were not lacking: he became a Knight of the Sovereign Order of Malta and Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Pius .
