Baron Beaumont

Baron Beaumont is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England , which is now used as a subordinate title of the respective Duke of Norfolk .

Award

The title was created on March 4, 1309 by King Edward II for Sir Henry de Beaumont , when he was appointed to the royal parliament by Writ of Summons . He was a younger son of the French Vice Count of Beaumont-au-Maine from the Brienne family . It is possible that he was largely related to the English dynasty, in any case Edward II called him consanguineus regis in a document .

His great-great-great-grandson, the 6th Baron , was raised to Viscount Beaumont on February 12, 1440 . It was the first time that a Viscount title was awarded in the Peerage of England. His son and heir, the 2nd Viscount , were stripped of his titles in the turmoil of the Wars of the Roses in 1461, restored in 1470, revoked again in 1471 and restored in 1485. The Viscountcy was hereditary only in the male line and expired with the childless death of the 2nd Viscount in 1507. The barony was inheritable as Barony by writ also in the female line and fell in Abeyance between the grandchildren of his sister Joan Beaumont († 1466) from the line of her descendants first marriage to John Lovel, 8th Baron Lovel .

This Abeyance only ended when a descendant from this family line was appointed to the House of Lords by Queen Victoria on October 14, 1840 by Writ of Summons and thus recognized as the 8th Baron Beaumont. At the death of his younger son, the 10th Baron, the title fell in Abeyance between his two daughters in 1895. After the death of the younger daughters, the Abeyance was ended on June 1, 1896 in favor of the eldest as the 11th baroness. Their son, the 12th Baron , inherited the title of 17th Duke of Norfolk from his father in 1875 . The barony has since been a subordinate title of the respective duke.
