Edward William Fitzalan-Howard, 18th Duke of Norfolk , DL (born December 2, 1956 ) is a British nobleman who has been a member of the House of Lords as the Duke of Norfolk since 2002 . As the hereditary Earl Marshal of England , he is responsible for organizing the grand ceremonies of court and parliament in England.

Life

Edward William Fitzalan-Howard is a descendant of John Howard , who became Duke of Norfolk in 1483. The Howards are considered to be the top of the Catholic nobility in England.

After attending Ampleforth College , he studied at Lincoln College at the University of Oxford and was then employed by Sigas Ltd from 1979 to 1988 and then from 1989 to 2002 at Parkwood Group Ltd.

After the death of his father Miles Fitzalan-Howard, 17th Duke of Norfolk , he became his heir on June 24, 2002 as the 18th Duke of Norfolk, 36th Earl of Arundel, 19th Earl of Surrey, 16th Earl of Norfolk, 13th Baron Beaumont, 26th Baron Maltravers, 16th Baron FitzAlan, 16th Baron Clun, 16th Baron Oswaldestre and 5th Baron Howard of Glossop.

He also took over the inheritance office of Earl Marshal of England from his father , after he was Deputy Earl Marshal of England between 2000 and 2002. As Earl Marshal, the Duke of Norfolk is the only holder of a hereditary nobility title besides the Lord Great Chamberlain who is automatically a member of the House of Lords so that he can perform his ceremonial duties in the House of Lords . He also took on the role of Deputy Lieutenant of West Sussex in 2002 .

The Duke of Norfolk, who is also a member of the Livery Company of the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers , also bears the subordinate titles of nobility of Earl of Arundel , Earl of Surrey , Earl of Norfolk , Baron Beaumont , Baron Maltravers , Baron FitzAlan , Baron Clun , Baron Oswaldestre and Baron Howard of Glossop .

He married Georgina Susan Gore in 1987, with whom he has three sons and two daughters. Since 2011, the couple lived temporarily apart.

Heir to the title is the eldest son, Henry Miles Fitzalan-Howard, 37th Earl of Arundel (* 1987), who has made a name for himself primarily as a racing driver. In 2016 he married Cecilia dei Conti Colacicchi from papal nobility .

Since June 2012 the Duke has been on leave of absence from attending the meetings of the House of Lords .

The family lives in Arundel Castle in West Sussex and Carlton Towers in Yorkshire . Arundel is one of the most famous castles in England and has been inherited from 1102 until today.
