Baron Maltravers

Baron Maltravers (also Mautravers ) is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .

Award

The title was created on January 25, 1330 as Barony by writ for John Maltravers , when he was appointed to the royal parliament by Writ of Summons .

When he died on February 16, 1364, the title in Abeyance fell between his granddaughters Joan and Eleanor. When Joan died around 1383 without heirs, the title fell to Eleanor as 2nd Baroness Maltravers according to today's legal opinion, although she probably did not officially hold the title. At her death in 1405 the title fell to her grandson John FitzAlan, 3rd Baron Arundel . He had inherited the title of 3rd Baron Arundel from his father in 1390 and inherited the title of 13th Earl of Arundel in 1415 .

The 20th Earl of Arundel was stripped of all his titles in 1589 for high treason. They were restored in 1604 for his son, 21st Earl of Arundel and 11th Baron Maltravers. The titles of 4th Earl of Surrey , 14th Baron Mowbray , 15th Baron Segrave , which had been revoked in 1579 from his grandfather Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk, were also restored in his favor . For his son the title 5th Duke of Norfolk was restored in 1660 . The titles mentioned are subordinate titles of the Duke of Norfolk to this day. The eldest son of the prospective title heir ( heir apparent ) of the reigning duke carries the courtesy title of Lord Maltravers as his heir apperent .
