Thomas Howard, 1639

Thomas Howard, 5th Duke of Norfolk (born March 9, 1627 in Arundel House in London , † December 13, 1677 in Padua ), was an English nobleman . His full title was Thomas Howard, 5th Duke of Norfolk , 23rd Earl of Arundel , 6th Earl of Surrey , 3rd Earl of Norfolk .

Thomas Howard was a son of Henry Frederick Howard, 22nd Earl of Arundel , and his wife Elizabeth Stuart of Lennox . He followed his father as Earl of Arundel in 1652 and his grandmother as 14th Baron Furnivall , 16th Baron Talbot and 18th Baron Strange of Blackmere in 1654 . During his training Thomas fell ill with a fever, which permanently damaged his mental state.

Thomas was the great-great-grandson of Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk . When the title of Duke of Norfolk was restored in 1660 , Thomas saw himself as the senior of the family branch as the 5th Duke of Norfolk. The office of Earl Marshal associated with the dukedom was exercised by his brother Henry because of his mental illness .

Thomas died unmarried and childless at the age of 50 in Padua.
