Bernard Marmaduke Fitzalan-Howard, 16th Duke of Norfolk (born May 30, 1908 in Arundel , † January 31, 1975 ) was a British nobleman .

family

Fitzalan-Howard was born on May 30, 1908 in Arundel , the ancestral home of the Dukes of Norfolk . His parents were Henry Fitzalan-Howard, 15th Duke of Norfolk (1847-1917), and Gwendolyn Constable-Maxwell, 12th Lady of Herries of Terregles (1877-1945). He was married to Lavinia Strutt, daughter of 3rd Baron Belper, since January 27, 1937. From this marriage there were four daughters. He died in 1975. The eldest daughter, Lady Anne , inherited the Scottish barony of Herries of Terregles , while the remaining titles went to the next male heir.

Life

Fitzalan-Howard held the courtesy title of Earl of Arundel until his father's death, until 1917 when he inherited his father's numerous titles and honors. He was now not only Duke of Norfolk , but Earl of Arundel as well . Earl of Surrey and Earl of Norfolk , plus Baron Fitzalan , Baron Clun , Baron Oswaldestre and Baron Maltravers . He also inherited the hereditary dignity of Earl Marshal of England and the title of Premier Duke and Earl of England.

During the Second World War he served as an officer, most recently as a major , and was wounded. His duties as Earl Marshal included organizing the coronation of George VI. and Elizabeth II and the investiture of Prince Charles as Prince of Wales . In addition to the management of his inherited estates and the exercise of his seat in the House of Lords , he was Lord Lieutenant of Sussex representative of the Crown in the county . In addition to the titles inherited from his father, he inherited her Scottish title as 13th Lord Herries of Terregles when his mother died in 1945 .

He was particularly interested in cricket and horse racing . 1956/7 he was President of the Marylebone Cricket Club .

For his services he was made a Knight of the Order of the Garter and awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Victoria .
