The Casa de las Conchas (German House of Shells ) in Salamanca , the capital of the Spanish province of Salamanca in Castile-León , is a palace from the end of the 15th century. The building is a protected architectural monument ( Bien de Interés Cultural ).

description

The Casa de las Conchas , built between 1493 and 1517 for Rodrigo Arias de Maldonado, is right next to the Pontifical University . The facade facing the street is very eye-catching because it is made of granite bricks adorned with more than 300 scallops , the symbol of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela . Comparable buildings are the Casa de los Picos in Segovia and the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara .

The portal is decorated with a coat of arms in the Plateresque style . Inside the patio has a gallery on the first floor supported by polygonal columns .

Todays use

The building now houses a provincial government public library.
