Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara

The Palazzo dei Diamanti (German: Palace of Diamonds ) is a museum building in the provincial capital of Ferrara in the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy , which houses an important picture gallery consisting mainly of works by Ferrara painters.

building

The building designed by Biagio Rossetti owes its name to the architecturally idiosyncratic design of its marble façade, which was composed of 12,600 blocks of marble at the order of the client Ercole I , the ends of which are not flat, but pyramid-shaped and which are therefore reminiscent of cut diamonds. A cut diamond was the symbol of Ercoles I, which he also used in his coat of arms. The early Renaissance building was started in 1492 and completed in 1567 with the cross cornice.

Exhibitions

On the upper floor is the National Picture Gallery ( Pinacoteca Nazionale di Ferrara ) with works by representatives of the Ferranes school such as Cosmè Tura (1430–1495), Ercole de 'Roberti (approx. 1450–1496), Domenico Panetti (approx. 1470–1513) , Dosso Dossi (approx. 1479–1542), Giovanni Battista Benvenuti alias Ortolano (approx. 1480–1525), Sebastiano Filippi alias Bastianino (approx. 1528–1602) and Carlo Bononi (1569–1632). A few separate exhibition rooms are dedicated to Benvenuto Tisi Garofalo (1481–1559), who was highly stylized in the 19th century . Works by the Ferrara-born painter Ippolito Scarsella alias Scarsellino (1551–1621) as well as the Florentine painter, sculptor and architect Giotto di Bondone (approx. 1266–1337) and other artists can also be seen.

In room 10 cenacoli (“ Evening Meals ” or “Dining Rooms ”), large-scale paintings from monastic dining rooms by Ippolito Scarsella ( Ultima cena and Nozze di Cana ) and Carlo Bononi ( Nozze di Cana ) are shown. In the great hall of honor ( il grande salone d'onore ) there are also large-format paintings by Domenico Panetti ( Angelo annunziante , Vergine annunziata ), Giuseppe Mazzuoli alias Bastarolo ( Deposizione dalla croce ) and Garofolo ( Adorazione dei Magi , L'Adorazione dei Magi con San Bartolomeo ).

The gallery for modern art is located in the basement and has been showing temporary exhibitions since 1992, for example:
