Lord Herries of Terregles is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland , which is named after the Herries family and the place Terregles near Dumfries .

History of the title

The title was created on February 3, 1490 for Herbert Herries . As the Scottish Lordship of Parliament , the title can also be inherited in the female line in the absence of male heirs.

The 9th Lord participated in the Jacobite revolt of 1715 and was sentenced to death in 1716 for high treason. He was able to evade execution through a spectacular escape to France, but all of his titles were stripped from him and his lands were confiscated. The title was not restored until 1858 for his great-grandson in the female line William Constable-Maxwell as 10th Lord.

The 11th Lord was also awarded the title Baron Herries , of Carleverock Castle in the County of Dumfries and of Everingham in the East Riding of the County of York in the Peerage of the United Kingdom on November 10, 1884 . Due to the lack of male heirs, this title expired on his death on October 6, 1908.

Today's title holder has been Mary Katherine Mumford (née Fitzalan-Howard) as the 15th Lady Herries of Terregles since 2014 .
