John Maxwell, 3rd Earl of Nithsdale

John Maxwell, 3rd Earl of Nithsdale (* around 1600 , † between February 16 and June 29, 1677 ), was a Scottish nobleman .

Life

His father was John Maxwell, 6th Lord Herries of Terregles , a great-grandson of Robert Maxwell, 4th Lord Maxwell ; his mother was Elisabeth Maxwell, daughter of John Maxwell, 7th Lord Maxwell . When his father died in May 1631, he inherited him as the 7th Lord Herries of Terregles .

Like many members of the Maxwell clan, he was also an active royalist and was therefore on the losing side several times. Outlawed in the English Civil War in 1645 , this ban was lifted in 1647 in return for a payment of 10,000 Scottish Merks . After the reestablishment of the monarchy in 1660, it was ostracized again in 1661 for various reasons, which was also repealed against payment of the same amount.

When his third cousin, Robert Maxwell, 2nd Earl of Nithsdale , died childless on October 5, 1667 , he inherited his title of nobility as 3rd Earl of Nithsdale and 11th Lord Maxwell as the closest relative .

Through his marriage, on August 19, 1626, to Elisabeth Gordon, a sister of John Gordon, 1st Viscount of Kenmure , he had three sons:
