Robert Maxwell, 2nd Earl of Nithsdale
Robert Maxwell, 2nd Earl of Nithsdale (born September 1, 1620 in Dumfries , † October 5, 1667 in Caerlaverock Castle ), was a Scottish nobleman .
Life
His father was Robert Maxwell, 1st Earl of Nithsdale ; his mother was Elisabeth Beaumont († 1671), a daughter of Sir Francis Beaumont.
Even though he was considered an active royalist in his younger years, the ostracism pronounced against his father in the English Civil War in 1645 against a payment of 10,000 Scottish Merks was lifted on February 3, 1647 and thus his title of nobility for him as 2nd Earl of Nithsdale and 11th . Lord Maxwell restored. He appeared neither politically nor militarily. Because of his preferences for the fine arts and astrology , he was called "the philosopher".
A marriage contract between him and the underage Sophia Murray, a daughter of John Murray, 1st Earl of Annandale , was closed on August 6, 1622 in Windsor, but never redeemed. He died unmarried and childless in 1667. His titles of nobility fell to his third cousin John Maxwell, 7th Lord Herries of Terregles .
