Philip Howard, 20th Earl of Arundel (born June 28, 1557 in London , † October 19, 1595 in London) was an English nobleman and martyr . He is a saint of the Catholic Church.

Life

Philip Howard was born in 1557 to Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk , and Lady Mary FitzAlan, daughter of Henry FitzAlan, 19th Earl of Arundel of the House of FitzAlan . His godfather was Philip II of Spain . His father taught Howard on the principles of John Foxe and then sent him to Cambridge University .

In 1580 Philip Howard became Earl of Arundel . In this capacity he took part in the interrogation of Edmund Campion in the Tower of London . After his wife Anna Dacre converted to Catholicism in 1581 , Howard did the same in 1584. This was viewed with suspicion at the court in London and Howard was forced to flee. However, he was arrested a few days later and taken to the Tower as a prisoner by Elizabeth I. In 1589 he was accused of having initiated a mass for the victory of the Spaniards against England, and he was sentenced to death. The sentence was not carried out and Howard remained imprisoned in the Tower until his natural death in 1595 and was buried there. There is a suspicion that he was poisoned. In 1624, Howards widow reached James I. the transfer of the remains to Arundel Castle . From there they were transferred to Arundel Cathedral in 1971 , which also received the subsidiary patronage of the newly canonized saint.

Philip Howard was born in 1920 by Pius XI. Beatified , in 1970 he was canonized by Paul VI. along with the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales . His feast day is October 19th.

Thomas Howard, 21st Earl of Arundel is his son.
