John Foxe

John Foxe (also, Johannes Fox , * 1517 in Boston , Lincolnshire , † April 8, 1587 in London ) was an English writer .

Life

Foxe studied at Brasenose College of Oxford University . After the accession to the throne (1553) of Queen Maria I Tudor , he fled to the continent. There Foxe met the most important reformers of the time and became a staunch supporter of Johannes Calvin . With Queen Elizabeth I accession to the throne (1558) Foxe was able to return to England , where he became Canon of Salisbury on January 25, 1560 through Edmund Grindal , Bishop of London . The English edition of Acts and Monuments , better known as Foxe's Book of Martyrs , appeared in 1563. Foxe praised the heroism of the Protestant victims during the reign of Mary. He celebrated Anne Boleyn z. B. as a martyr of the English Protestants.
