Baron Arundel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baron Arundel is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .

Award

The title was created on August 4, 1377 as Barony by writ for John Arundel (also John Fitzalan ), when he was appointed to the royal parliament by Writ of Summons . Since he was married to Eleanor Maltravers , co-heiress and ultimately the sole heiress of John Maltravers, 1st Baron Maltravers , the view is sometimes taken that his barony is identical to the Barony Maltravers . At least both titles were combined when his wife died in 1405 by his grandson as 3rd Baron Arundel and 3rd Baron Maltravers. In 1415 he inherited the title of 13th Earl of Arundel .

The 20th Earl of Arundel was stripped of all his titles in 1589 for high treason. They were restored in 1604 for his son, 21st Earl of Arundel and 11th Baron Arundel. The titles of 4th Earl of Surrey , 14th Baron Mowbray , 15th Baron Segrave , which had been revoked in 1579 from his grandfather Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk, were also restored in his favor . For his son the title 5th Duke of Norfolk was restored in 1660 . The titles mentioned are subordinate titles of the Duke of Norfolk to this day.
