Baron Arundell of Wardour , in the County of Wiltshire , was a hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of England .

The family's ancestral home was Wardour Castle in Wardour near Tisbury in Wiltshire. The castle was razed in the English Civil War . The 8th Baron built the new family seat New Wardour Castle two kilometers away between 1769 and 1776 .

Award

The title was created on May 4, 1605 by King James I through Letters patent for Sir Thomas Arundell .

The title expired when his descendant, the 16th Baron, died of tuberculosis on September 25, 1944, unmarried and childless .

Other titles

The later 1st Baron had joined the Imperial Army at his own expense in the fight against the Ottomans in the Long Turkish War . In particular during the siege of the city of Gran (Esztergom) he distinguished himself on September 7, 1595 when he himself captured the Turkish banner at the beginning of the assault on a breach in the fortress Wasserstadt (Víziváros). In recognition of his bravery, the Roman-German Emperor Rudolf II raised him to the hereditary count of the Holy Roman Empire on December 14, 1595 . The award was angered by Queen Elizabeth I , so she had him temporarily detained on his return to England.
