U1 to Farmsen ( Walddörferbahn )

The U3 line of the Hamburg subway runs as a ring line through the center of the city. The service takes place in both directions of the ring, so both from Wandsbek-Gartenstadt via Barmbek and the ring back to Barmbek and in the opposite direction.

The identification color of the line is yellow .

course

U3 before the line swap in 2009

In total, the trains on the U3 line stop at stations 26 times, with Barmbek approaching twice. Most of the route runs as an elevated railway , on dams or in a cut. Only nine stops, between Schlump and Landungsbrücken and between Rathaus and Uhlandstrasse , are in tunnels. Of the total of 20.681 kilometers, only 5.113 kilometers run in the tunnel.

The course as a complete ring line has existed again since June 29, 2009, when the eastern branches of the U2 and U3 lines were swapped in the course of a reorganization of the underground network . The U3 previously ran from the Berliner Tor stop on the branch of today's U2 via Billstedt to Mümmelmannsberg . The previously existing continuous routing of trains on the ring route was given up on January 2, 1967 with the commissioning of the first section of the Billstedt route to Horner Rennbahn. Since then, the lines that were valid until summer 2009 existed as lines U2 and U3.

business

For a complete journey on the 20.681-kilometer route, the subway takes between 44 and 45 minutes, depending on the direction of travel (2019 timetable). This results in an average speed of around 28 km / h. A maximum of 70 kilometers per hour can be driven on the U3. The maximum permissible speed between the Barmbek and Saarlandstrasse stations and between Schlump and Mundsburg is 60 kilometers per hour.

Clocking

The U3 trains generally run every 5 minutes during main traffic times (HVZ), every 5 minutes during secondary traffic times (NVZ) and every 10 minutes during late hours (SVZ) from 9 p.m. and on Sunday mornings .

During rush hour, the elevated railway runs additional amplifier trains. On the ring line, the train sequence is compressed to a 2.5-minute cycle. Furthermore, on Friday and Saturday evenings, the 5-minute cycle is extended to around midnight on this section.

On the nights from Friday to Saturday and from Saturday to Sunday and before public holidays, continuous night -time operation of the rapid transit railways is offered every 20 minutes on the entire route of the U3 line, in the ring section every 10 minutes.

Since November 1, 2017, the intervals on the ring section of the U3 have been further compressed in the evening and night hours. The trains then run every five minutes until around 11 p.m. on Monday through Thursday evenings.

The symmetry time of the U3 is a few seconds after the minute x1.

Vehicle types

For the underground traffic of the U3 mainly trains of the type DT5 are used. They have been running on this line as scheduled since July 2013 and gradually replaced the DT3E trains that had been running until then , which were still used sporadically in 2018.

Trains of types DT3 and DT5 can be used with a maximum of six cars, especially on the Saarlandstrasse - Kellinghusenstrasse - Landungsbrücken - Berliner Tor section. The platform length of 90 meters on this section is not sufficient for longer formations. The type DT4 can only be used as a short pull (pull from a unit with a length of 60 meters).

history

Construction of today's U3 in Harvestehude, 1909

The ring line was built between 1906 and 1912, at that time it was already 17.48672 kilometers long and served 23 stops. In 1906, work began on the Kuhmühlenteich at what is now the Uhlandstrasse subway station. Siemens & Halske acquired the concession and founded Hamburger Hochbahn AG in 1911 . The first, and thus the oldest, section of the route went from the town hall via the main train station to Barmbek and was inaugurated on February 15, 1912. Ongoing operations began on March 1, 1912. The section from Barmbek to Kellinghusenstrasse was inaugurated on May 10, 1912, the section from Kellinghusenstrasse to Millerntor (today St. Pauli) followed on May 25, 1912. The ring was closed on May 29, 1912 June 1912. The subway cars were originally painted beige in the upper half and lemon yellow (3rd class) or wine red (2nd class) in the lower half. Because they were susceptible to dirt, the wagons were painted dark green from 1914 onwards with yellow (3rd class) and red (2nd class) areas below the windows. After the abolition of the classes in 1920, the red surfaces were painted yellow and the interior of the cars was also adapted.

The 3.194 km long line branch from Barmbek to Wandsbek-Gartenstadt is part of the 28.050 km long Walddörferbahn to Volksdorf, Ohlstedt and Großhansdorf, which opened between September 12, 1918 and February 1, 1925. The rest of the line from Wandsbek-Gartenstadt has been operated by today's U1 line since the Wandsbek subway was completed on August 4, 1963. The Habichtstraße stop was only opened later on June 23, 1930 because of the lack of development.
