The DT5 (double multiple unit 5) is an underground train from Hamburger Hochbahn AG . It has been used in passenger operations since November 6, 2012 . In total, the elevated railway has ordered 131 units of the type for underground operation.

The DT5 trains replaced the DT2E and DT3E vehicles that were largely decommissioned during their commissioning . According to the Hochbahn, the total costs for the first 87 train units of the DT5 series amount to around 340 million euros. Another 20 units were ordered in December 2015, and a further 11 units followed in March 2016. This order amounts to 100 million euros. Due to increasing passenger numbers, a further 13 units were ordered in November 2018, which are to be put into service by the end of 2020, and two options for 16 additional vehicles each were secured. In 2015, the Hamburg Senate put the maintenance costs per year and vehicle at an average of around 70,000 euros.

The first completed unit was given the vehicle number 301 and was presented to the press on March 4, 2010 at the manufacturing plant in Salzgitter . Then it was transferred to Hennigsdorf for thorough testing, adjustment of the components and acceptance . A performance for the public took place on January 28, 2012 in the Jungfernstieg station . By February 2019, 100 DT5 units had been put into service in Hamburg.

features

The DT5 is similar to the DT3E .

construction

With the DT5, after the four-part DT4 , the elevated railway has again purchased three-part vehicles with a length of 39.6 m. The middle part of the vehicle has two bogies , the end cars have only one end bogie and are each saddled onto the middle car. The bogies of the end cars and the wheel sets of the bogies of the intermediate car that point towards the center of the vehicle are driven.

For the first time in the history of the elevated railway , the individual vehicle units are fully accessible.

Furnishing

Compared to the older generations of vehicles, the DT5 offers multi-purpose areas for bicycles, strollers, wheelchairs and luggage. These are located in the outer car in the area in front of the transitions. In order to gain the necessary space, a block of four seats was dispensed with and two folding seats were installed. For the first time since the DT3-LZB type , longitudinal seats were installed again, which connect to the transitions. The DT5 also has advanced passenger information systems , video surveillance , emergency call facilities and air conditioning . Further developed air-sprung bogies are supposed to increase the smoothness. The fire protection measures exceed the currently legally binding requirements. In addition to the sprinkler systems that are already present in the DT4, the DT5 is equipped with sprinkler systems with temperature sensors on the electrical cabinets.

For the first time, the door mechanism is set so that the doors close automatically when there are no passengers nearby. In the older vehicles, the door could only be closed manually by the driver or by the passengers themselves. The automatic closure reduces, among other things, the use of energy for heating and cooling the passenger compartment. The installation of waste bins was avoided. Each car is equipped with two screens, one side of which shows advertising, information and stopping information and the other side of which shows the route.

In December 2016, the unit 338 was equipped with USB charging sockets in the passenger compartment on a trial basis to enable passengers to charge smartphones, for example, while driving. In the meantime, all DT5 vehicles are gradually being equipped with USB charging sockets.

Environmental aspects

According to Hochbahn, the vehicles consist of almost 95% recyclable materials. The outer skin was not painted in favor of stainless steel planking.

As with the DT4 type , energy is fed back into the power grid during braking. At a speed of 60 km / h, a sound pressure level of 77 dB must not be exceeded. For this purpose, the wheels of the vehicles are equipped with specially developed axial wheel sound absorbers , which specifically dampen the oscillating movement of the wheels. The absorbers are mounted on the wheel rim close to where the airborne noise emitted by the wheel is generated, in order to convert the vibration energy directly into heat. The electric motor is water-cooled and the braking system (except for certain vehicles, such as 326) is particularly quiet due to the low-noise disc brakes.

design

The design of the vehicle was from the office Tricon design from Kirchentellinsfurt develops and uses both features of the previous generation DT4 and the older series DT2 and DT3 on. The angular design with the centrally projecting car body is particularly reminiscent of the DT4. However, the parallels to the DT2 / DT3 are more striking; The DT5, for example, has a silver-gray outer skin as it is not painted ; the side walls beaded below the windows , the red door areas and the red vehicle head are similar . In contrast to the DT3, however, not the entire doors, but only the upper door areas and the area of the vehicle roof above are kept red; the red on the vehicle head is only designed as a surrounding frame.

The interior is kept in beige and gray tones, the color of the seat covers corresponds to the burgundy red used by Hochbahn in all vehicle fleets in the future.

To assess the planning, a mock-up was produced in 2009 , based on which further design changes were developed.

commitment

On December 1, 2011, the first train with unit 306 arrived in Hamburg. In the first half of 2012, Hochbahn undertook test drives across the entire network to check suitability for everyday use. On January 28, 2012, the unit was presented to the public in Jungfernstieg station.

From November 8, 2012, the DT5 was used on all lines. Since July 2013 it has been mainly on the U3 . As with the DT3 on this line, a configuration of two units is used because the platforms on this line are only 90 m shorter than the other platforms in the network (125 m). As a result, the last DT4 short trains on the U3 could be ended during rush hour . They have also replaced the DT3 here since 2015. Since summer 2017, the circulations have been carried out almost exclusively by DT5. The last 15  DT2s were decommissioned in November 2015 and a large part of the DT3s has also been decommissioned since the end of 2016.
