DT1 ( double multiple unit 1) is the name of a vehicle series of the Hamburg subway and the first new series since the 1930s. Although only 50 double railcars were produced from the series, it served as a trailblazer for the successor series DT2 and DT3 . Their use lasted from May 1958 to 1991, the majority of the vehicles have since been scrapped.
history
After the end of the Second World War , the Hamburger Hochbahn was initially able to fall back on the pre-war fleet of T-cars . Of the 125 wagons that were (partially) destroyed in the war, 118 received new bodies on extended chassis in the late 1940s and early 1950s. These cars were called B and later TU1 cars , the 102 cars from the modernization phase around 1960 as U and TU2 cars . The latter were given the nickname “Silberlinge” because of their unpainted car body , now clad with stainless steel sheet metal. Since this reconstruction or modernization solution was initially only intended to maintain operation and the expansion of the network was planned, a new series had to be ordered.
The DÜWAG designed the vehicles of the new model, according to the HHA, the electrical equipment supplied Siemens-Schuckert and AEG .
When the number was renumbered in 1960, the original order was changed. Instead of the order of their delivery, the cars were now classified according to ownership. The 64 state cars were given the numbers 9000/9001 to 9062/9063, the 36 HHA cars were given the numbers 9064/9065 to 9098/9099.
The new EDP numbers from 501 were never attached to the car, except for the "Hanseat" (516). At the time of this renumbering, the 9076/9077, 9096/9097 and 9056/9057 cars had already been taken out of service, while the 9082/9083, 9094/9095 and 9058/9059 cars were part of the AT4 8044/8045 (026), AT5 8046/8047 power units (027) and AT4 8042/8043 (025) were converted.
In the 1980s, the Hamburger Hochbahn (HHA) decided to retire the trains and replace them with the new DT4 series . However, since the city-state of Hamburg was heavily in debt, the financial means were initially insufficient, which led to delays. After the delivery of the first DT4, the trains were taken out of service. This process was completed by 1991. The majority of the trains were then scrapped.
Construction and equipment
The two car halves, A and B cars, each rest on two powered bogies. The vehicles are controlled by a high-voltage cam switch and an electromagnetic contactor control . In addition, there is a converter on the B-car that feeds the 110-volt electrical system.
Each car has three 1346 mm wide double sliding doors (1070 mm clear width each) on each side, which run into door pockets. The passenger compartment is designed with dark wood paneling. The first 18 cars (9431/9432 - 9447/9448, after 1960: 9000/9001 - 9016/9017) have dark green padded 2 + 2 transverse seats (88 seats). All other cars have upholstered 2-seater transverse seats plus 3-seater longitudinal seats divided into compartments (80 seats per double railcar). The last 20 cars (9511/9512 - 9529/9530, after 1960: 9052/9053, 9054/9055, 9092/9093 - 9098/9099, 9056/9057 - 9062/9063), on the other hand, have gray front walls and red / gray-blue seats a new shape, as well as new window flaps. The 40th unit (9509/9510, after 1960: 9090/9091) already has the new seat shape, but still has the classic wooden front walls and the old hinged windows. The driver's cab is separated from the passenger compartment by a partition with a sliding door on the side, to which three folding seats are attached. On the last 20 cars this sliding door is coated with red formica , on the other cars it is made of wood. In the 1970s, the green or red / gray-blue seat covers were replaced by uniformly blue covers. The outside of the vehicles was painted red with a wide beige ribbon of windows. From 1969 the Hamburger Hochbahn changed the paintwork in two shades of gray with an orange-red front and doors in order to come close to the newer DT2 and DT3 series.
While the car bodies of the series constructed before the Second World War had a wooden frame, with the DT1 the all-steel construction was used in Hamburg's underground vehicles. However, the heavy vehicle weight led to a high energy requirement. The successor model DT2 was therefore implemented in a consistent lightweight steel construction (with Nirosta sheet metal), saving one set of wheels per car body . In contrast to the Berlin subway, no aluminum was used in the construction of the Hamburg subway cars .
The DT1 today
In the meantime, only the "Hanseat" (unit 516, ex 9030/9031, ex 9461/9462) and the AT5 027 work car (ex 8046/8047, ex 9094/9095, ex 9517/9518) are in use. Two units are still behind in a sweeping system . One (9022/9023, ex 9453/9454) serves as a spare parts dispenser for the "Hanseat", for the other (9034/9035, ex 9465/9466) it is planned to reactivate it and return it to its original condition for museum missions.
