Moravany nad Váhom (until 1927 Moravany in Slovak , Moraván in Hungarian ) is a municipality in western Slovakia . It is located in the Waag Valley at the foot of the Považský Inovec Mountains in the Danube Hills , 5 km from Piešťany .
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1348 as "Marwan". A well-known archaeological excavation site from the early Paleolithic is located in today's municipal area . This settlement of the mammoth hunters (des Pavloviens ) gained international fame when the " Venus of Moravany " was found here in 1938 . This Venus figurine is a 7.6 cm tall statuette made of ivory mammoth , which was dated to an age of around 22,800 years.
Later traces of settlement come from the Neolithic Lengyel culture .
Attractions
- Classicist Roman Catholic Church of St. Martin of Tours , the oldest building in the town. The aisle is built on the foundations of a Romanesque church from the 13th century.
