Ruby Phillip

Rubin Phillip (* 1948 ) is a South African Anglican clergyman. From 1999 to 2015 he served as Bishop of Natal in the Anglican Church of Southern Africa .

Life

As the great-grandson of debt servants from Andhra Pradesh , Phillip is the first non-white to hold the episcopate in Kwazulu-Natal . He grew up in a non-religious household in Calirwood , a suburb of Durban with a high concentration of people of Indian descent . He converted to Christianity and studied theology. During his studies he was involved in the South African Students' Organization and was temporarily the deputy of its president Steve Biko . He was under house arrest for three years because of his campaign against apartheid .

Phillip was ordained a deacon in 1971 and a priest in 1972. In 1995 he was ordained a bishop by Desmond Tutu . In February 2000, Natal was instituted as the diocesan bishop. Here he was particularly committed to the poor neighborhoods of Durban. He is chairman of the Southern African Liaison Office , an organization that promotes civil rights and political dialogue. In 2008, Phillip successfully applied for a court order that prevented ammunition from being delivered to Zimbabwe through South African territory. In 2012 he was elected Dean of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa. In 2015 he retired; he was succeeded by Dino Gabriel .

Phillip is married and has his son.

Honors

In 2009 Phillip received the Bremen Peace Prize and in 2010 the Diakonia Award for devoted service to human rights, justice and democracy from the Diakonia Council of Churches .
