Thomas Philipp (Internist)

Thomas Philipp (born April 30, 1942 in Königsberg ) is a German internist and university lecturer .

Life

Thomas Philipp studied medicine in Mainz and Munich from 1962–1968 , in 1968 he passed the German and in 1969 the American ( ECFMG ) state examination. In 1971 he received his doctorate from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz , where he also completed his training as a specialist in internal medicine at the I. Medical Clinic until 1976. In 1972 WHO training on cardiovascular epidemiology took place in Singapore ("Fifth International Teaching Seminar on Cardiovascular Epidemiology").

Philipp completed his habilitation in 1978 on the pathogenesis of essential hypertension , and a year later he was appointed professor at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. In 1981 he received a university professorship for internal medicine and nephrology at the Free University of Berlin , in 1987 he was elected director of the I. Medical Clinic, Klinikum Karlsruhe. In 1988 Philipp moved to Essen , where he was appointed director of the Clinic for Kidney and Hypertension Diseases at the Center for Internal Medicine at the University Hospital Essen , where he was appointed to the Chair of Internal Medicine ( C4 professorship ). In addition, Philipp was Medical Director of the Essen University Hospital from 1998 to 2001.

Philipp was, among other things, research dean of the medical department of the Free University of Berlin (1982–1987), member of the board of the German Hypertension League (1985–1989 and 1992–1995), member of the senate committee of the German Research Foundation for Collaborative Research Centers (1990–1996), member of the board of the German Society for Internal Medicine (1998–2004), member of the ethics committee of the North Rhine State Medical Association (1999–2007) and chairman of the examination board for nephrology and general medicine (2000–2007).

Between 1988 and 2007, 14 of his senior physicians became professors or chief physicians. In his department 32 specialists in internal medicine and 23 nephrologists were trained. During his active activity 74 doctors received doctorates and 15 doctors qualified as professors. Under his direction, the Department of Kidney and Hypertension Diseases was one of the most research-intensive institutions in the medical faculty with over 500 original publications.

Clinically, Philipp set up the largest peritoneal dialysis center in the Ruhr area in Essen and expanded kidney transplants, including a life donation program, to over 3000 kidney transplants. The first German hypertension guideline and essential contributions to research into the causes of hypertension are thanks to Philipp.

Outside of Europe, Philipp initiated and promoted the establishment and expansion of nephrological centers, including in Nizhnij-Novgorod (Russia), San Pedro Sula / Honduras and Maiduguri (Nigeria).
