Michael Schacherl

Michael Schacherl (born June 20, 1869 in Pressburg , Austria-Hungary ; died June 6, 1939 in Vienna ) was an Austrian politician ( SDAP ). He was a member of the Reichsrat , Nationalrat , Styrian Landtag and Provincial Council in Styria. Schacherl played an important role in the Styrian labor movement as a publicist and speaker.

Life

Schacherl was born the son of a peddler. He attended elementary and middle school and then studied medicine between 1887 and 1893. He received his doctorate in 1895 and was initially employed at the Rudolfstiftung Hospital . In 1896 he moved to the General Hospital in Graz. Schacherl wrote numerous social brochures and in 1891 became an employee and in 1899 editor-in-chief of the Graz social democratic newspaper Arbeiterwille .

Schacherl was a councilor in Graz from 1903 and a member of the Styrian state parliament from 1904. He was also a member of the Reichsrat between 1897 and 1900 and from 1905 to 1918. He was a leading member of the workers' abstinence union and belonged to the anti-war wing of the Social Democratic Party during the First World War . After the First World War, Schacherl was a member of the Provisional National Assembly from October 21, 1918 to February 16, 1919, and was then a member of the Constituent National Assembly from March 4, 1919 to April 22, 1920 . In addition, Schacherl was from November 6, 1918 to March 11, 1919 regional councilor in the Kaan regional government . Schacherl resigned his political mandate in 1920 and subsequently practiced as a doctor in Sankt Radegund near Graz . In addition, he was editor-in-chief of the Wiener Arbeiter-Zeitung from 1921 to 1934 .

Schacherl's son was the architect Franz Schacherl .
