Franz Schacherl (born November 28, 1895 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary ; died October 28, 1943 in Nova Lisboa , Angola ) was an Austrian architect .

Life

Franz Schacherl came from a Jewish social democratic house. Michael Schacherl , a member of the National Council, was his father. After attending the Technical University in Graz , Schacherl started in Vienna in the early 1920s as an architect for the Austrian Association of Settlers in Vienna, allotment gardeners and small animal breeders . There he met Franz Schuster , with whom he worked at the Vienna Settlement Office. As a socialist, he found no way to work as an architect after 1933. Finally he emigrated to Paris in 1938 , where he got in touch with the Portuguese government through Baron Rothschild. In 1939 he went to the Portuguese colony of Angola, where he was greeted with approval, but ultimately could not realize any plans. Not least because of the desperate hospital conditions there, Schacherl died at the age of 48.

meaning

Franz Schacherl was a specialist in settlement construction, for which he vehemently advocated in specialist articles such as political magazines. He saw the realization of proletarian building in a housing policy moving in the direction of the garden city and opposed the construction of high-rise buildings and large apartment blocks. His ideal was a simple, clear and functional design without reminiscences of petty bourgeois living.
