history
Argenton-sur-Creuse is near the ancient oppidum Argentomagus , which was just north of the present-day city. The Biturigen settled here in pre-Roman times . The Romans conquered the region around 50 BC. The name of the ancient city is probably derived from the Latin word for silver, because the city was a center of silver processing. In Argentomagus, two roads from Burdigala (now Bordeaux ) to Avaricum (now Bourges ) merged. In Gallo-Roman times, the place flourished especially in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.
In the Middle Ages , Argenton-sur-Creuse developed into a place in a dominant position on a hill. In 761 Pippin the Younger conquered the city and its castle from Duke Waifar of Aquitaine. In 1020 Argenton-sur-Creuse was taken by the lord of Déols and has shared the fortunes of Berry ever since . King Philip II August seized the place in 1188. The medieval city lay only on the left bank of the Creuse; It was not until the 14th century that it began to expand across the right bank of the river. In the 16th century, Argenton-sur-Creuse was a permanent place of the Holy League , but submitted to Henry IV as early as 1589. The town's castle was built under King Louis XIII. razed by order of Richelieu in 1632; Ruins of the donjon , commonly known as the Tour d'Héracle , remain.
As the SS division “Das Reich”, the Germans committed war crimes against civilians on June 9, 1944, with 67 murdered (cf. Argenton-sur-Creuse massacre )
On August 31, 1985, a serious railway accident occurred at Argenton-sur-Creuse station, in which 43 people were killed.
