In the railway accident of Argenton-sur-Creuse derailed on August 31, 1985, the night train from Paris Austerlitz to Portbou in the station of Argenton-sur-Creuse due to excessive speed. Another train drove into the derailed car . 43 people died.

Starting position

Argenton-sur-Creuse station is on the Orléans – Montauban railway line . The speed was temporarily reduced to 40 km / h due to track construction work. The signal that indicated the speed reduction was partially obscured by other signals, so that it was difficult for the engine driver to see.

the accident

The engine driver did not recognize the signal and passed the construction site at around 100 km / h. The train derailed, with the last two cars getting into the clearance profile of the track in the opposite direction. The approaching rail mail train from Brive-la-Gaillarde to Paris could no longer stop and drove into the two passenger cars that were in its path.

consequences

43 people died and 38 others were injured. After the railway accident in Flaujac, this was the second serious accident within a month at the SNCF , the president of which therefore resigned.

The cause of the accident is similar to that of the Brühl railway accident .
