history

Saint-Genou goes back to a Benedictine abbey founded in the 9th century by the Count of Bourges at a place called "Strate", today's Estrées . After the destruction by the Normans , it was rebuilt a little further downstream. The relic of St. Genulfus kept there gave its name to the village that developed around the abbey. At the time of the French Revolution, Saint-Genou became a commune.

  • Romanesque church Sainte-Vierge - the church from the 12th / 13th centuries Century has been classified as a monument historique since 1862 . Despite the missing nave, which was destroyed in 1676, the three-aisled basilica is one of the pristine Romanesque monuments in the Berry. In addition to the partially restored crossing , the choir of the church with its side aisles extending over the transept has been preserved. The barrel vault of the central nave and (narrow) side aisles is typically Romanesque; the walls above the arcades of the central nave, which are additionally structured by false galleries in the form of blind arcades; overlying ceilings ; lower eastern part, separated from the nave by an arched wall, with a semicircular apse, flanked by two chapels; remarkable capital sculpture.
  • Lantern des morts
  • Porcelain museum
