Astrophytum capricorne is a species of the genus Astrophytum in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet capricorne is derived from the Latin words caper or capra for 'goat' and cornu for 'horn' and refers to the twisted thorns of the species.

description

Astrophytum capricorne grows with green, spherical bodies that are densely covered with white tufts of hair. They reach heights of growth of 10 to 15 centimeters and diameters of 10 to 15 centimeters. The 7 to 8 very sharp-edged ribs have round areoles that are 2 to 3.5 centimeters apart. The resulting 5 to 10 yellow to brownish black thorns are twisted to coiled, flattened, a little flexible and 3 to 7 centimeters long.

The fragrant, yellow flowers have a reddish throat, are 6 to 7 centimeters long and reach 4 to 6 centimeters in diameter. The fruits tear open at their base.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Astrophytum capricorne is common in the Mexican states of Coahuila , Nuevo León and San Luis Potosí in the Chihuahua Desert .

The first description as Echinocactus capricornis by Albert Gottfried Dietrich was published in 1851. Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Astrophytum in 1922 . Another nomenclature synonym is Maierocactus capricornus (A.Dietr.) ECRost (1925).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
