Rolf Picking

Rolf Pflücke (born June 11, 1942 in Bruchsal , Baden-Württemberg) is a German journalist.

Pflücke studied social sciences and ethnology in Heidelberg and received his doctorate in 1970. phil. He then completed a traineeship at SWF television in Baden-Baden . After long stays in the USA and Latin America, he worked as a freelance television documentary artist. After the military coup in Chile in 1973, the ARD sent him to South America as a television correspondent. In 1974 he became studio manager in Buenos Aires (Argentina), reporting area all of Latin America. His 'baptism of fire' (sic) as a journalist was picked after the bloody coups in Chile and in 1976 in Argentina. In addition, he made great Latin American authors such as Jorge Luis Borges , Gabriel Garcia Marquez , Mario Vargas Llosa , Jorge Amado , Ernesto Sabato , João Ubaldo Ribeiro and others known to a broader German TV audience with his literary documentaries .

In 1979 he settled in Heidelberg and shot reports as a freelance TV journalist all over the world in the following years. 1985–1991 he went to Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) as head of the South America studio on behalf of the Second German Television (ZDF). Main focus in addition to the current reporting: culture and environment. He shot numerous reports about the return of Chile and Argentina to democracy and provided information in his reports on the destruction of the Amazon jungle and the situation of the indigenous peoples.

After 1991, Pflücke worked at the ZDF in Mainz as a presenter of the international journal and several special programs (ZDF-Spezial). He also shot TV documentaries for Terra X in Peru and Ecuador and with the Norwegian Thor Heyerdahl (Kon-Tiki) in the Pacific.

In 1993, Pflücke became a ZDF correspondent in Rome, responsible for Italy and Greece. These were the years of the great political corruption scandals, of Silvio Berlusconi and the coming to terms with Mafia crimes (trials of Palermo). From Rome he also reported on the Kosovo war. After his return in 1998 he was deputy head of the main foreign affairs department and responsible for the 'ZDF report'.

Picking has been awarded several film prizes. In 1990 his book South America - The Lost Century was published . He has two daughters.

In 2008 he went to West Africa. He works as a volunteer coordinator for the non-governmental organization 'Konvoi der Hoffnung eV'. In Burkina Faso, Togo and the Congo he is committed to building schools, kindergartens and reservoirs, literacy for adults and microcredits for women and the maintenance of a school for the deaf and dumb.
