Ernesto Sabato

Ernesto Sabato (born June 24, 1911 in Rojas ; † April 30, 2011 ) was an Argentine writer , scientist and painter .

Life

Ernesto Sabato was born in 1911 in Rojas in the province of Buenos Aires , the tenth of eleven children of an Italian immigrant couple , Francisco Sabato and Juana María Ferrari . The father came from an old aristocratic family of the Arbëresh . In La Plata he attended school and university ( Universidad Nacional de La Plata ); He completed his studies in physics and mathematics in 1938 with a doctorate. Before the Second World War he lived in Paris for a long time , where he went through an existential crisis; not until 1935 did he return to Argentina. At 28, he was already a university professor of theoretical physics at the Instituto de Física at the Universidad de la Plata and worked at the Laboratoire Curie in Paris and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on atomic physics until this facet of his work in 1945 finally gave up.

From then on, Sabato worked as a translator and worked for UNESCO for a short time .

At the request of President Raúl Alfonsín , Sabato was appointed chairman of the Commission for the Uncovering of the Crimes of the Military Dictatorship (CONADEP), which investigated the crimes of the Argentine military dictatorship from 1976 to 1983, and in 1984 the documentary volume Nunca más, also known as the Sabato report ("Informe Sabato") ("Never Again") published.

In 1984 he received the Cervantes Prize . In later years he worked mainly as a painter. In old age, Sabato became almost completely blind.

interpretation

His novel Sobre Héroes y Tumbas (On Heroes and Graves) is considered one of the most important novels in Argentine literature of the 20th century.
