Pedro Henríquez Ureña (born June 29, 1884 in Santo Domingo , † May 11, 1946 in Buenos Aires ) was an important Dominican writer , philosopher , philologist and literary critic .

Life

Pedro Henríquez Ureña was born into a family of intellectuals. His mother was Salomé Ureña , an eminent Dominican poet and feminist, and his grandfather Nícolás Ureña de Mendoza was a politician.

After completing his schooling, he emigrated to Mexico in 1906. There he studied philosophy and later worked as a lecturer in philology at the university. In the years immediately before the Mexican Revolution , he belonged to a liberal intellectual circle that included Alfonso Reyes , Julio Torri, Antonio Caso and José Vasconcelos . Thanks in part to these encounters, he began his research into the Hispanic language and Hispanic-American identity in Mexico, with which he is still associated today. In particular, his two essays La Utopía de américa and Patria de la justicia were much discussed .

In 1915 he emigrated from Mexico to the USA, where he spent the next decade and a half, with a few interruptions from long trips. First he worked as a journalist, from 1921 he took over a professorship at the University of Minnesota . In 1930 he moved to Argentina to do research and teach at the Philological Institute of the University of Buenos Aires .

Pedro Henríquez Ureña died on May 11, 1946 in Buenos Aires.
