Ana María Barrenechea

Ana María Barrenechea (born March 6, 1913 in Buenos Aires ; † October 4, 2010 ibid) was an Argentine Romance and Hispanicist .

life and work

Anita Barrenechea studied with Amado Alonso and Pedro Henríquez Ureña . She taught early at the “Instituto Superior del Profesorado” in Buenos Aires, received her doctorate from Bryn Mawr College in 1955 with the thesis La expresión de la irrealidad en la obra de Jorge Luis Borges (Mexico City 1957, Buenos Aires 1967, 1984, expanded 2000 ; English: Borges. The labyrinth maker , New York 1965) and was professor at the University of Buenos Aires from 1958 to 1966 .

In 1966 she vacated her chair for political reasons and did research at the Torcuato Di Tella Institute (today: Universidad Torcuato Di Tella ), which saved her from emigrating. She often spent six months abroad as visiting professorships (including Harvard University , 1968; Ohio State University , 1971 and 1972; Columbia University from 1973 to 1984). In 1984 she was able to retire due to the changed political situation at the University of Buenos Aires and worked there until her old age.

Anita Barrenechea was from 1977 to 1980 (the first female) chairwoman of the Asociación Internacional de Hispanistas (International Association of Hispanists).

Anita Barrenechea was an Honorary Doctor of Smith College (1967) and Corresponding Member of the Real Academia Española .
